14 Days Mount Kenya Trek & Masai Mara Safari

The very name Kenya conjures up imageries of classic African wildlife and rightly so, the very concept of safari was borned in Kenya itself. Indeed Kenya is generally acknowledged as the 'Safari Capital' of the world and famous for its wildlife, particularly the Big Five (lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard and black rhino). On the savannahs, one can see the 'Big Five' as well as a host of other species. Apart from these animals, the spectacularly beautiful soda lakes of the Great Rift Valley teems with flamingos and one can also find crocodiles in other waterways, many species of monkeys in the forests, and many more. The birdlife is equally as varied including ostriches, vultures, many types of eagles, and even parrots up on Mount Kenya.

A visit to Kenya is never complete without a trek up Mount Kenya ( the other famous mountain in East Africa ), one of the most beautiful mountains in all of Africa. Despite lying directly on the equator, it's two highest peaks Batian ( 5,199-m ) and Nelion ( 5,088-m ) , are permanently iced with snow and glaciers and their ascents calls for technical mountaineering skills. It's third highest peak, Point Lenana ( 4,985-m ), like Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, is accessible to normal hikers and does not require any climbing skills. The ascent to the tourist peak of Lenana is one of the highlight of this trip.

On the ascent, there are good opportunities to see gorgeous scenery and various unique flora on the mountain - astonishing giant mutation of the alpine groundsels and lobelias growing to incredible heights.

Best Season
Mount Kenya Trek : For best weather, best times are from mid-January to late February and late August to September

Safari. The dry & cool period between June and October makes for the best time to visit Kenya. August & September is the most popular-and most crowded-time of year to visit the Masai Mara Reserve as this is when the annual wildebeest migration moves into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti ( in Tanzania ).

Day 1
Singapore - Nairobi
Day 2 - 8

7D Mount Kenya Trek: Sirimon-Chogoria Route
There are several routes leading to the summit. For our Mount Kenya climb, we will take the Sirimon-Chogoria ( or the reverse Chogoria-Sirimon ) route. The Sirimon route approaches from the North and has a good reputation for wildlife along the route. This route tends to be the driest but can be a difficult climb. The Chogoria approach is from the East and generally is acknowledged as the most scenically attractive of the lot, although it can be wet at times. The route may be longer ( and hence cost may be higher ) than the standard same way in-same way out option (ie. Sirimon-Sirimon or Naro Moru-Naro Moru or even the Naro Moru-Sirimon routes) but we believe the additional payoffs ( better scenery & experience ) will more than offset that extra hundred dollar.

Day 9 - 13 5D Masai Mara + Great Rift Valley Safari
After the climb, we will take on a round of the famous Kenyan safari with a visit to the beautiful Masaai Mara Game Reserve, host to millions of plains animals during their migratory exodus from the Serengeti every August and September. During this period, the grasslands are literally blanketed with game. A visit to the Great Rift Valley ( Lake Naivasha, Lake Baringo etc. ) will complete our Kenya experience, thus giving us the ultimate combination of high altitude trekking and first class game viewing.
Day 13 - 14 Nairobi - Singapore

Our safari program is a highly flexible one. The duration can be reduced or extended by 1-2 days or replaced by another place of attraction for a personalised program.

The program may even be combined with the Tanzanian northern safari circuit. Whatever sights or activities interest you, the program can be tailored accordingly to suit your interests.

Although not as high as its famous neighbour Kilimanjaro, the Mount Kenya trek is still an arduous experience due to its fast ascent - it takes as short as 2 days to reach Point Lenana from the base. Incidentally, Mt Kenya has one of the highest rate of altitude sickness of all high mountains in the world. Trekkers also need to be well prepared for its unpredictable weather - rain, hailstorm and snow are not uncommon within a single day. Our program takes a relax pace up to allow for sufficient acclimatization to ensure success on the mountain with sufficient time for the equally long trek down to ensure that the downhill trot won't put too much stress on your knees.
